AI assists in medicine, simplifies daily tasks, and even plays a role in military operations. But as technology progresses, questions arise: Could AI pose a threat to humanity? Who is creating these intelligent systems, and could AI ever fully replace human beings?

In this article, we will explore and try to understand AI’s impact on our lives and whether its potential is something to fear.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to a set of technologies and algorithms that allow us to make predictions, receive recommendations, and make data-driven decisions. The goal of AI is to handle tasks previously considered possible only for humans. Simply put, AI is a method enabling computers and programs to “think” in ways similar to the human brain.

Ideally, AI would operate independently as a standalone system. However, currently, every command it receives is processed within its existing algorithms.

Artificial intelligence. Image: Gerard Siderius / Unsplash

In reality, AI is not a new concept, and we’ve all interacted with it (even if unknowingly). Technologies like fingerprint scanners, Face ID, and even predictive text (T9) on your device are examples of AI. Voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, smart home systems, and vehicle autopilot functions are all forms of artificial intelligence.

Who Created Artificial Intelligence?

The concept of “artificial intelligence” dates back centuries, rooted in the philosophical questions of life and death pondered by ancient thinkers. Early inventors created mechanisms called “automata”—self-operating devices that could move without human intervention. The term “automaton” comes from ancient Greek, meaning “to act of one’s own will.” One of the earliest examples was a mechanical dove built around 400 BCE by a friend of the philosopher Plato. Much later, around 1495, Leonardo da Vinci presented one of the most famous automata.

3D model of Leonardo da Vinci’s machine gun. GIF: Wikipedia

While the idea of machines that can function autonomously has existed for thousands of years, the focus on developing modern AI began in the 20th century when scientists and engineers actively pursued its creation.

In the early 1900s, media and literature were full of stories about artificial beings, sparking scientific interest in creating a mechanical brain. Innovators began experimenting with early prototypes of what we now call “robots,” a term first introduced in a 1921 Czech play. Many of these early devices were simple, steam-powered, and sometimes able to mimic facial expressions or even walk.

The development of AI as we know it today was greatly influenced by two key figures: Alan Turing and John McCarthy.

A scene from Karel Capek’s play R.U.R., showing the robot uprising. This test was designed to see if a machine could behave in a way indistinguishable from a human. In the original test, an interrogator communicates with two participants—one human and one machine—through a text-based interface. If the interrogator cannot tell which machine is the machine, the AI is considered to have passed the test.

Interrogator: In the context of the Turing Test, this is the person asking questions to determine which participant is human and which is a machine.

The term “artificial intelligence” was coined by John McCarthy in 1955 when he was an assistant professor of mathematics at Dartmouth College. He wanted to unify AI research into a single field focused on developing “intelligent machines” capable of mimicking human thought.

Alan Turing. In cardiology, it assesses cardiovascular risk and detects arrhythmias. In gastroenterology, AI identifies colon polyps, while in neurology, it helps diagnose epilepsy and tremors. Endocrinology uses AI to monitor blood glucose levels continuously.

Clinical Research and Drug Development: AI assists in formulating new drugs and finding treatments tailored to specific diseases.

Medical Imaging: AI algorithms analyze medical images with high precision, identifying anomalies often missed by the human eye. AI is used to detect early signs of cancer, pneumonia, and other conditions, processing medical scans like MRI, ultrasound, ECGs, and CT scans.

In Education

AI has the capacity to gather and analyze data, providing educators with valuable insights into student engagement and learning progress. It also offers interactive digital tools that allow students to connect with teachers and manage their personal development on an individual level.

A man and a robot. Image: Igor Omilaev / Unsplash

One of the most significant advantages of AI in education is the ability to deliver personalized learning experiences. AI-driven systems can create customized learning plans and assessments that cater to each student’s abilities and needs, offering an engaging and effective learning experience.

Moreover, AI greatly facilitates learning for students with limited mobility. Intelligent learning platforms can identify areas where students need extra support and offer personalized recommendations. This allows students who may require additional time or assistance in certain subjects to successfully integrate into the overall educational process.

Additionally, AI enables teachers to monitor how well students are grasping the material and track their progress throughout lessons or courses. This helps identify areas that may require further attention and allows educators to take necessary actions.

Finally, AI opens new possibilities for virtual reality (VR) applications. The SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) algorithm enables computers to create mapping models from camera data, laying the groundwork for VR experiences, like in games such as Pokémon Go. Research from the Institute for Creative Technologies at the University of Southern California has shown that military personnel learn certain skills more effectively using these simulations compared to traditional methods.

In Everyday Life

Smart plugs in your home allow you to monitor energy consumption by tracking how long each device runs and how much power it uses. This can help optimize energy usage, such as by installing smart bulbs in lamps or managing room heating with smart thermostats.

Imagine an automated home system that can detect if a child is crying, an elderly person has fallen and cannot get up, or an intruder is present. Modern surveillance cameras have evolved beyond simple motion detection. They now use AI to analyze movement patterns, recognize visitors’ faces, identify strangers, and respond to specific sounds like a child’s cry, providing timely alerts.

Intelligent security systems can also detect irregularities, such as unusual noise levels, helping catch minor issues early, like a water leak in the bathroom.

AI even assists in the kitchen. Common smart appliances like ovens, refrigerators, and multi cookers make meal preparation easier. Some devices can recognize ingredients and adjust cooking methods based on your preferences. For instance, if you frequently roast meat and potatoes, the appliance will remember this and automatically set the appropriate cooking parameters.
